Esri's Geometric Network reached end of support in March 2026. If you are still on ArcMap with legacy network data, your fiber GIS is running on a platform with no forward path inside Esri's old stack. The decision is no longer whether to migrate. Why the Geometric Network retirement matters
ArcMap and the Geometric Network were the default utility GIS stack for decades. Esri has moved forward with ArcGIS Pro and Utility Network. That means operators on the old stack are maintaining custom models on unsupported software — a growing security, staffing, and compliance risk for teams that need vendor-supported systems for grant reporting and enterprise procurement.
The two migration paths
Path A: Migrate to Esri Utility Network
Utility Network is Esri's forward model inside ArcGIS Enterprise. It is powerful, but it was built for large utilities first and telecom second. Strand-level connectivity, PON topology, and fiber-native workflows often require significant customization through partner system integrators.
For Tier-1 carriers with large GIS teams and long procurement cycles, Path A can make sense. For most regional ISPs, electric coops, municipal broadband programs, and engineering firms, the year-one economics are hard to justify.
Path B: Leave the Esri ecosystem
Path B treats the retirement deadline as a chance to evaluate purpose-built fiber GIS platforms. The candidate set is small: IQGeo, VETRO FiberMap, 3-GIS, and MapItRight among others. The question is not brand recognition. It is whether the data model, field workflow, pricing, and migration path fit a fiber operator's real work.
The honest cost model for Esri Utility Network
Utility Network pricing is not public. For a mid-market fiber operator, year-one cost usually comes from three buckets:
- ·ArcGIS Enterprise licensing and infrastructure.
- ·Partner system integrator fees for configuration, migration, and customization.
- ·Internal GIS staffing to run the platform after go-live.
It is common for mid-market deployments to land in the mid-six figures in year one when licensing, SI work, and staffing are counted together. That does not mean Utility Network is bad software. It means the economics were designed for a different buyer profile than most regional fiber operators.
